Programs & Services
In response to the diverse and evolving needs of a growing aging population, the Hollywood Senior Center provides more than 50 separate programs, classes, activities and services every month. Below are standing programs, activities and services. Be sure to check out our monthly newsletter or the front page of our website for special workshops, classes, services and other opportunities.

SOCIAL SERVICES & SUPPORT SERVICES
CASE MANAGEMENT
Hollywood Senior Center provides a comprehensive care coordination assessment, arranges for needed services, and provides follow-up and re-evaluations. This program works to help older adults remain in their homes as long as possible. There is no charge for this service. The Center Staff currently works with 158 senior clients.
FAMILY CAREGIVER ASSISTANCE/ADVOCACY
Free assistance from our professional Social Work staff is available to family and concerned caregivers who are serving people aged 60 and older. We provide needs assessment, care planning and coordination of respite and in-home services to caregivers.
INFORMATION & ASSISTANCE
Our I&A Specialist and other staff are available to take your questions over the phone, by email and in person about housing, transportation, caregiver services, support services, and many other areas. We can provide you with information and referrals and offer crisis and short-term intervention and assistance for seniors, their caregivers and other support networks.
SENIOR LAW PROJECT LEGAL CLINIC
This is a free service provided by Legal Aid Services of Oregon and affiliated volunteer attorneys. It is for people aged 60 and older, who are residents of Multnomah County. Appointments are for 30 minutes. Appointments are available every Friday, 9:00am – 11:00pm. Call for more information and to make an appointment.
SHIBA – SENIOR HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFITS ASSISTANCE
Free help with Medicare and other health insurance provided by trained volunteers associated with Multnomah County Aging & Disability Services. SHIBA services are for all Medicare beneficiaries, their family members, caregivers and advocates. Appointments are available in the mornings on the 1ST and 3RD Thursdays of each month. Call for more information and to make an appointment.
OTHER SUPPORT SERVICES INCLUDE: Income Tax Assistance, Flu Shots, Energy Assistance.
HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAMS and SERVICES
TAI CHI CLASS
Offered through the Taoist Tai Chi Society™ Tai Chi is a low impact exercise designed to enhance health. Join us to learn this ancient Chinese exercise emphasizing relaxation, stretching, health improvement and stress reduction.
Tuesday, Wednesday, & Friday, 3:00pm Drop-ins o.k.
COST: $5.00/month to Taoist Tai Chi Society, plus $1 per class facility fee to Hollywood Center.
HI-STEPPERS EXERCISE GROUP
Start your morning off with this low aerobic exercise class that gets you moving and ready for the rest of your day. Tuesday, Wednesday 8:45am – 9:45am Drop-ins welcome. Donations appreciated
ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION EXERCISE PROGRAM
This exercise program, designed to accommodate those with arthritis, promotes optimum joint flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, coordination and cardiovascular conditioning. Led by a trained instructor. Monday and Wednesday, 11:00am to 12:00pm Donations appreciated
CHAIR YOGA
This class is designed for individuals 55 and up. Instructor Lenore Bijan, at 77, is the oldest recipient of accreditation by the Movement Center to teach Hatha Yoga. The class features an individual approach to teaching and works to improve balance and breathing. Thursdays from 9-10am.
BODY RECALL
Slow movement exercises designed to secure physical fitness without injury or pain. Anyone can participate, regardless of their current physical condition. This class will increase stamina and energy. Led by a trained instructor. On Hiatus until February 2010 COST: $20 per month or $3 per session
Wii Bowling
Join others in play with this very realistic virtual bowling game on our big screen TV. You have to try this sensational new technology that allows anyone of any age and mobility level to have great fun bowling for the highest score. Every Wednesday, 1:00 p.m. Donations appreciated.
ACUPUNCTURE CLINIC
Experience acupuncture treatments provided by supervised interns from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine for only $10 per visit. Private room available on a first come basis.
Monday, at 8:15 – Noon COST: $10 per visit. Appointments are required available.
FOOT CARE CLINIC
Every Friday, seniors needing help caring for their feet can schedule a 45 minute appointment with a registered nurse. Friday, 9am – 4pm
COST: $28 initial visit, $25 follow–up care, $40 for home visit by RN.
Appointments are required.
BLOOD PRESSURE CHECK CLINIC
When was the last time you had your blood pressure checked? Stop in on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month from Noon to 1pm and have your blood pressure checked for free by a registered nurse. No appointment necessary. Donations appreciated.
LGBTQI Loaves & Fishes Meal Site at Metropolitan Community Church
Every Wednesday 12pm to 1pm – doors open at 11am. A satellite of the Hollywood/Fook-Lok Loaves & Fishes meal site for Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender, Questioning, & Intersex (LGBTQI) Elder community. MCC is located at 2400 NE Broadway.Socialize and enjoy a hot meal. $2.75 suggested donation per meal for seniors; under 60 $5.50

SUPPORT GROUPS
ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP
Caregivers & family members come to share ideas for coping and caring, meet new friends who can identify with what you are going through. Drop-ins welcome. 2nd Wednesday of every month, 1:00pm – 3:00pm. Donations appreciated.
LOSS & LIFE TRANSITION GROUP
Facing the challenges of aging can be easier when there are others who understand and care. In this group, sponsored by VIEWS (Volunteers Involved for the Well-being of Seniors), members support and encourage each other in making the shifts in perspective that allow for a more satisfactory quality of life. Pre-registration is required. Time to be announced when caller is registered. Donations appreciated
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Socrates’ Café Group
Engage in stimulating conversation about troubling or intriguing questions in this discussion group. The group meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, 10:00am – Noon
Creative Writing Group
Join with other writer’s, read their writings and share your own, 2nd and 4th Monday of each month, 10:00am – Noon, Donations appreciated
Book Discussion Group
Join the Book Discussion Group for stimulating conversation about current literature. The books are available at the Hollywood Senior Center or the Hollywood Library. The Discussion Group meets the Third Tuesday of each month, 1:00pm. Donations appreciated
Ceramics Group
Join other ceramic enthusiasts every Wednesday, 9:00am. The Center has its own kiln. Donations appreciated
Mellodiers Singing Group
Do you enjoy singing? Come and join the Mellodiers Singing Group. They meet every Thursday at 10:30am. Donations appreciated
Bridge Group
Join with other experienced Bridge Players every Monday, 10:00am – 12:30pm. Donations appreciated
Pinochle Group
Join other pinochle players every Thursday from 1:00pm – 2:45pm. Donations appreciated
Bunco
Bunco is a game of chance using three dice. So if you are looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon come on down. Bunco is every Tuesday, 1:00pm – 2:45pm. Donations appreciated
Birthday Celebration
On the last Tuesday of each month the Center honors all those who celebrate their birthday during that month. There will be cake for everyone and if your birthday falls this month you will be eligible for a drawing for a birthday cake to take home. Entertainment is provided.
Movies Matinees
Come see a new release in our Big Screen Theater on the 2nd & 4th Friday of the month. The same movie will play the following Friday with subtitles. Seating is limited to the first 40 people. Movie time starts at 1:00pm. $1 requested donation. Arrive early.
Billiards
Anyone interested in picking up a game of eight or nine ball pool is invited to visit our pool room available Monday afternoon, all day on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.
Travel
Extended, escorted cross-country and overseas tours are offered quarterly.
Pancake Breakfast
Come and enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes, with bacon & eggs, juice & coffee. Featuring REAL maple syrup. Our Pancake Breakfast is the third Saturday of the Month from 8:30am – 11:00am. Adults $3.50 and children $2.25. All proceeds benefit the Hollywood Senior Center.
Soup & Sandwich Lunch
Enjoy café style soup, sandwich, and a dessert every Tuesday & Thursday, and the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month 11:30am – 12:45pm.
Education
Individual Computer Lessons
Want to learn more about using computers? Get set up for email? Facebook? We provide two one-one computer lessons at no charge. Classes are taught by a knowledgeable and patient senior computer enthusiast. By appointment only. Tuesdays from 11-noon and Thursdays from 1-2pm. Donation
